The Girl Who Disappeared Twice [Hardcover]

Product Description

SHE COULDN'T STOP IT. NOT THEN. NOT NOW.

If she'd only turned her head, she would have seen the car containing her daughter, struggling to get out. Struggling to escape her kidnapper.

Despite all her years determining the fates of families, veteran family court judge Hope Willis couldn't save her own. Now she's frantically grasping at any hope for Krissy's rescue. Her husband dead-set against it, she calls Casey Woods and her team of renegade investigators, Forensic Instincts.

A behaviorist. A techno-wizard. An intuitive. A former Navy SEAL. Unconventional operatives. All with unique talents and personal reasons for being part of Casey's group, they'll do whatever it takes.

Able to accurately read people after the briefest of encounters, Casey leads her crew to Krissy's home.

There, she picks up the signs of a nervous spouse, a guilty conscience, a nanny that hides on her cell. She watches as secrets beg to creep into the open.

Forensic Instincts will dig through each tiny clue and eliminate the clutter. But time is running out, and even working around the clock, the authorities are bound by the legal system. Not so Casey's team. For they know that the difference between Krissy coming back alive and disappearing forever could be as small as a suspect's rapid breathing, or as deep as Hope's dark family history.

Louise from Book Bliss

Hi! My name's Louise and I'm the blogger behind BookBliss. I've always had a love of reading, when I was at primary school they actually ran out of books for me to read, as did my local library, I had to travel into town to the 'big' library in order to get books. Due to my love of reading I studied literature at university and hated it, although I enjoyed a lot of the books, I don't like reading because I have to and I don't like the in depth dissection of the books. I prefer to read a book to enjoy it and then be able to say what I liked about it without having to do an in-depth analysis.

When moving house recently my friend was amazed at how many books I had (a double book case full), I thought this was quite normal and that everyone would have bookcases full of books, apparently it's not. Around the same time I got asked to join Amazon Vine where in exchange for reviews you get certain products provided, they're primarily ARC's so I was made up, when I googled a lot of the books to see what people thought of them I discovered this whole book blogging world, I'm a top 1000 reviewer on Amazon but it had never occurred to me that I could do a blog as well. Throughout my family and in the office I'm known as the person to ask for a book recommendation, as I not only consider what I like but have a good feel for what other people will enjoy. My uncle loves the fact that I buy him books each year that he's never heard of as they're not chart toppers, yet he loves them. I figured if all these people like what I'm saying then it must be ok and so I launched BookBliss.

I read a huge variety of books although my favourites would be mystery/thriller and chick lit - an obvious connection! I have noticed that I've started to read different books since I started blogging as there's so many people saying about wonderful YA and paranormal books which I'd never have previously considered but I'm finding that I'm really enjoying them.

Q. How many books do you read in a week? And in what format do you read them, or listen to them?

I read two hard copy books in a week.

Love Me to Death: A Novel of Suspense [Mass Market Paperback]

I've finished "Love Me to Death" the 1st book in her Lucy Kincaid trilogy by Allison Brennan.

Product Description

Six years ago, Lucy Kincaid was attacked and nearly killed by an online predator. She survived. Her attacker did not. Now Lucy’s goal is to join the FBI and fight cyber-crime, but in the meantime, she’s volunteering with a victim’s rights group, surfing the Web undercover to lure sex offenders into the hands of the law. But when the predators she hunts start turning up as murder victims, the FBI takes a whole new interest in Lucy.

With her future and possibly even her freedom suddenly in jeopardy, Lucy discovers she’s a pawn in someone’s twisted plot to mete out vigilante justice. She joins forces with security expert and daredevil Sean Rogan, and together they track their elusive quarry from anonymous online chat rooms onto the mean streets of Washington, D.C. But someone else is shadowing them: A merciless stalker has his savage eye on Lucy. The only way for her to escape his brutality may be another fight to the death.

About the Author

Allison Brennan is the New York Times bestselling author of many romantic thrillers, including Carnal Sin, Original Sin, Fatal Secrets, Cutting Edge, and Sudden Death. A four-time RITA finalist and Daphne du Maurier Award winner, Brennan enjoys spending her free time reading, playing games, watching high school sports, and researching her novels. Language: English
ISBN-10: 0345520394
ISBN-13: 978-0345520395

My Review:

Storyline:  It has been six years since Lucy Kincaid was kidnapped and brutally raped, tortured and nearly killed.  Lucy killed one of her tormentors Adam Scott but can't seem to escape her past.  She now works for Women and Children First an organization that helps to protect women and children from sex offenders.  Lucy job is to search for cyber criminals, specifically sex offenders that have been paroled to see if they have returned to their criminal ways and put them back in jail. Lucy's greatest wish is to become an FBI agent but her dream is in jeopardy when another of her past attackers is murdered and evidence points to Lucy.

What Lucy did not count on were the guys she "set up" through online chats to end up dead on that exact same night. Now who is taking matters into their own hands and why are they making Lucy look like a suspect?

If she didn't have enough to deal with, Lucy discovers there is a stalker on her tail, and the terror of six years ago which constantly haunts her, comes rushing forward relentlessly. The one good thing coming through the nightmare is Sean Lucy's brother's Patrick's partner in security firm RCK (Rogan-Caruso-Kincaid). Sean insists on protecting Lucy no matter the consequences and will stop at nothing to keep her safe.

Characters:  Lucy Kincaid is a beautiful, courageous and intelligent woman that readers can look up to. She is tough as nails and has a heart of gold.  She has been through a horrifying and traumatic experience but it only has made her stronger and want to help other women in that same situation.

Sean Rogan is a known playboy but Lucy tempts him in ways no one has before. He sees not only the strong fighter but the soft woman inside Lucy.

Romance:  I really enjoyed the romance between Lucy and Sean because he was very understanding and he wanted to protect and support Lucy.  They worked well together and off each other too.

Killer(s):  The villains in this book are some of the nastiest I have read and the psyches glimpses we get are gruesome and shocking.

I highly recommend reading any Allison Brennan book for the very terrifying storyline, well written characters and the truly horrifying and vile villains you will ever read.

I also highly recommend reading "Fear No Evil" if you want to learn Lucy's backstory!

5/5

The Sentry (Joe Pike Novel) [Hardcover]

I've finished "The Sentry" the 3rd book in his Joe Pike series by Robert Crais.
Product Description

The extraordinary new crime novel from the New York Times bestselling author.

Dru Rayne and her uncle fled to L.A. after Hurricane Katrina; but now, five years later, they face a different danger. When Joe Pike witnesses Dru's uncle beaten by a protection gang, he offers his help, but neither of them want it - and neither do the federal agents mysteriously watching them.

As the level of violence escalates, and Pike himself becomes a target, he and Elvis Cole learn that Dru and her uncle are not who they seem - and that everything he thought he knew about them has been a lie. A vengeful and murderous force from their past is now catching up to them . . . and only Pike and Cole stand in the way.

About the Author

Robert Crais is the 2006 recipient of the Ross Macdonald Literary Award. He is the author of many New York Times bestsellers, most recently The First Rule.

Product Details
Hardcover: 320 pages

Language: English
ISBN-10: 0399157077
ISBN-13: 978-0399157073

My Review:

Storyline:  The Sentry opens with a prologue featuring a truly creepy and scary killer in New Orleans in 2005.

Then in the present day, Joe is at a gas station when he sees two men swaggering into a sandwich shop. Their body language tells Joe that the men are up to no good.

He enters the shop to see what's happening. He finds the the two men are beating the shop owner and showing no sign of letting up. Joe takes out one of the attackers and the other runs away.

The police arrest the attacker who Joe took down but later that night someone throws a can of paint through the shop window.

The owner's niece, Dru Rayne, asks Joe to help. Joe learns that the gang is trying to shake down the store owner for protection money. Joe approaches that gang leader and obtains the man's assurance that the hostilities toward the store owner will desist.

Joe believes that he has removed the threat and he and Dru enjoy a coffee break and visit. Dru tells him about her past and shows him a photo of her daughter. This hints that it could be the start of a romantic affair.

The next night, violence escalates. Some enters the store and creates havoc and a sign is painted on the wall, "I am here."

Joe recruits Elvis Cole to help him out who in turn recruits Lucy Chenier and her private investigator in the case.

Characters: Joe Pike is a noble ex-mercenary, ex-Los Angeles Police Officer and a man who cares for the less fortunate or abused. He's very popular with readers for his His courageousness and nobility.  He never worries about himself and will be in the middle of a fray to protective people he cares about.

Elvis is in a dark place at the moment with the events that has transpired in recent times (ex:  he lost the Lucy Chenier the women he loves and her little boy - though they are still friends).  I really love the way he treasures Joe as a long time friend and confidant and doesn't really like killing people which makes him cry.

Romance:  It really looked like it was start of a romance between Joe and Dru but she's not who he thinks she is and that killed the romance between them.  He was really attracted to her and I know it hurt him when he found out who she was and what she was.

Killer(s):  Daniel is a hit man who is the creepiest and scariest killer Robert Crais has ever created.  Man is he very disturbing and I'm sure gave most people nightmares (he likes to play and torture his victims and make them suffer and then go for the final kill)!

I've finished "Toys" by James Patterson.

Language: English
ISBN-10: 9780316097369
ISBN-13: 978-0316097369

My Review:

Hays Baker and his wife Lizbeth are part of a super human group known as Elites. The Elites (a technologically advance race of humans) have essentially taken over the earth after a catastrophic event in the past where humanity was nearly killed off. Currently the Elites run society and maintain order and consider humans trash. Hays and his wife work for the Agency of Change (they keep the order and keep humanity at bay) and Hays is on his way up the ladder of success until he confronts a human that will forever change his life. After falling nearly 10 stories from a building Baker is rushed to the hospital and he learns he is going to live but his life is forever changed as he is brought in for surgery.

He finds out he isn't quite as "elite" as he thinks he is while his wife Lizbeth isn't quite who we think she is.  Hays meets his sister  Lucy and goes from hunter to the hunted as he becomes a wanted fugitive by the Agency in which he once worked for and finds himself working alongside humans to save the world from a holocaust of humanity.

This isn't your typical James Patterson book but it had a lot of excitement from the first page to the last page.

It really was a quick and fun read and I highly recommend reading only if you have an open mind and looking for something new in the sci-fi genre.

Fallen: A Novel [Hardcover] ARC - Received Tuesday

Product Description

There’s no police training stronger than a cop’s instinct. Faith Mitchell’s mother isn’t answering her phone. Her front door is open. There’s a bloodstain above the knob. Her infant daughter is hidden in a shed behind the house. All that the Georgia Bureau of Investigations taught Faith Mitchell goes out the window when she charges into her mother’s house, gun drawn. She sees a man dead in the laundry room. She sees a hostage situation in the bedroom. What she doesn’t see is her mother. . . .

“You know what we’re here for. Hand it over, and we’ll let her go.”

When the hostage situation turns deadly, Faith is left with too many questions, not enough answers. To find her mother, she’ll need the help of her partner, Will Trent, and they’ll both need the help of trauma doctor Sara Linton. But Faith isn’t just a cop anymore — she’s a witness. She’s also a suspect.

The thin blue line hides police corruption, bribery, even murder. Faith will have to go up against the people she respects the most in order to find her mother and bring the truth to light — or bury it forever.

Karin Slaughter’s most exhilarating novel yet is a thrilling journey through the heart and soul, where the personal and the criminal collide, and conflicted loyalties threaten to destroy reputations and ruin lives. It is the work of a master of the thriller at the top of her game, and a whirlwind of unrelenting suspense.

The Ridge [Hardcover] - ARC

In an isolated stretch of eastern Kentucky, on a hilltop known as Blade Ridge, stands a lighthouse that illuminates nothing but the surrounding woods. For deputy sheriff Kevin Kimble, the lighthouse-keeper's death is disturbing and personal. Years ago, Kimble was shot while on duty. Somehow the death suggests a connection between the lighthouse and the most terrifying moment of his life.

Audrey Clark is in the midst of moving her large-cat sanctuary onto land adjacent to the lighthouse. Sixty-seven tigers, lions, leopards, and one legendary black panther are about to have a new home there. Her husband, the sanctuary's founder, died scouting the new property, and Audrey is determined to see his vision through.

As strange occurrences multiply at the Ridge, the animals grow ever more restless, and Kimble and Audrey try to understand what evil forces are moving through this ancient landscape, just past the divide between dark and light.

Ninja Girl from Ninja Girl Reads

Hi there, Ninja Girl here. I started a blog about three months ago called Ninja Girl Reads where I review mostly YA and paranormal titles. Growing up I was one of those kids who hated reading, absolutely refused to pick up a book unless it was assigned in school. Then a guy named Harry Potter came along, and I caught the book bug. It was like a whole new world opened up, and I just couldn't get enough. I'm an aspiring author who reads too much, sleeps too little, and loves finding the next series or single title that'll keep me up nights. I also love finding awesome book blogs, commenting, and stalking them to my heart's content. So if you've got any amazing recs (books or blogs), I'd love to hear them!

My favorite authors include Meg Cabot (always makes me laugh), Elizabeth Scott, and J.K. Rowling on the YA front, Patricia Briggs, J.R. Ward, and Susan Elizabeth Phillips for adult. I'm basically addicted to The Black Dagger Brotherhood series, in love with Zsadist, want my own brother to take home etc. But who doesn't, right? Can't get enough of anything paranormal/superhero-ish. Mainly because in my head I am one (Note: for proof see Ninja Girl profile photo). I'm still learning the ways of the blog-o-verse, but I hope you'll stop by and take a look.

Q. It's circle time. Time for us to open up and share. Can you tell us FIVE quirky habits or things about you?

We all have them...

1.  Every morning I must have my cup of tea while reading a book (it helps me wake up).

2. Every week I must read at least two mysteries/thrillers or romantic suspense among my paranormals.

3. I love playing horror survival games either on PC or any of the PlayStation consoles.  The scarier the better especially at night without the lights on.

4.  I love making new blogger friends.

5. At night I must read for an hour before going to sleep (if I don't I have trouble falling asleep)

Chasing Fire [Hardcover]

I've finished "Chasing Fire" by Nora Roberts.

Product Description

The number-one New York Times-bestselling author delves into the world of elite firefighters who thrive on danger and adrenaline - men and women who wouldn't know how to live life if it wasn't on the edge.

There's little as thrilling as firefighting - at least to Rowan Tripp. The Missoula smoke jumpers are in Rowan's blood: her father is a legend. She's been fighting fires since her eighteenth birthday. At this point, returning to the wilds of Montana for the season feels like coming home - even with reminders of the partner she lost last season still lingering.

Fortunately, this year's rookie crop is one of the strongest ever - and Gulliver Curry's one of the best. He's also a walking contradiction, a hotshot firefighter with a big vocabulary and a winter job at a kids' arcade.

Everything is thrown off balance when a dark presence lashes out against Rowan, looking to blame someone for last year's tragedy. Rowan knows she can't complicate things with Gull - any distractions in the air or on the ground could mean the end - but if she doesn't find someone she can lean on, she may not make it through the summer. . . .

My Review:

Storyline:  Last season Rowan watched her jump partner, Jim Brayner, die while on a jump with her.  She is blames herself  and still has issues with it she has to get past ... like the dreams that have been haunting her.

Gull is determined for Rowan to let him 'in', and in his own dogged way inserts himself into her daily routine...they are just beginning to have a relationship when the woman who had been dating Jim, the jump partner who'd died, shows back up on the base begging for a job and because she is pregnant with what might be Jim's child, is given one. But she blames Rowan  and is determined to make her life hell.

Characters:   Rowan is strong and independent woman who is hard but fair. She is a good trainer and team leader. I loved the scenes in which she trained the new smoke jumpers and the way she supported them and joked with them was admirable.  She is also quick tempered, loyal to her friends and family and very protective of her dad.  Man she could even kick butt!

Gull is intelligent, interested in a lot of variety of different things and seems to live his life exactly the way he wants to.  I really enjoyed their highly entertaining bantering dialogue and the way Gull focused on Rowan and never gave up on her.   I'm really glad Rowan gave him a chance.

I loved reading about the camaraderie of the smoke jumpers and about their missions. The smoke jumpers are like a small family who love to rib each other and there are a lot of funny scenes between them.  I was  interested in reading about their operations and I was impressed that with every jump into the flames they risked their lives.

Romance:   Both Rowan and Gull are such a wonderful couple because they support each other and work well together.

I also enjoyed the smaller love story between Rowan's father and a woman he meets. Their relationship is so cute and sweet and shows that you are never too old to find love.

Killer(s):  The killer was pretty screwed up and life wasn't so great for them.

5/5

A Drop of the Hard Stuff (Matthew Scudder) [Hardcover]

Product Description

Matthew Scudder is facing his demons. Forced out of the NYPD, he's given up the drink. He's thinking seriously about his relationship with sometime girlfriend Jan. Then he runs into "High-Low" Jack Ellery, a childhood friend from the Bronx. They're two sides of the same coin: Scudder once solved crimes as a detective. Ellery committed them. In Scudder, Ellery sees the moral man he might have become. In Ellery, Scudder sees the hard-won sobriety he hopes to achieve.

Then Ellery is killed, shot once in the mouth and once between the eyes, presumably while attempting to atone for past sins. Is it what he saw or what he said that got him killed? Ellery had no family, no friends to press for justice. Scudder reluctantly begins his own investigation, with just one lead - Ellery's Alcoholics Annonymous list of people he wronged. One of them may be a murderer, but that's not necessarily Scudder's greatest danger. Immersing himself in Ellery's world may lead him right back to the bar stool.

Exploring themes of loss, nostalgia, and redemption, for Lawrence Block, A DROP OF THE HARD STUFF circles back to how it all began, reestablishing why the Matthew Scudder series is widely regarded as one of the pinnacles of American detective fiction.

Sixkill (Spenser Mystery) [Hardcover]

I've finished "SixKill" the 39th book in his Spencer series by Robert B. Parker.

Product Description

An extraordinary new Spenser novel from the beloved New York Times-bestselling author.

On location in Boston, bad-boy actor Jumbo Nelson is accused of the rape and murder of a young woman. From the start the case seems fishy, so the Boston PD calls on Spenser to investigate. The situation doesn't look good for Jumbo, whose appetites for food, booze, and sex are as outsized as his name. He was the studio's biggest star, but he's become their biggest liability.

In the course of the investigation, Spenser encounters Jumbo's bodyguard: a young, former football-playing Native American named Zebulon Sixkill. Sixkill acts tough, but Spenser sees something more within the young man. Despite the odd circumstances, the two forge an unlikely alliance, with Spenser serving as mentor for Sixkill. As the case grows darker and secrets about both Jumbo and the dead girl come to light, it's Spenser-with Sixkill at his side-who must put things right.

About the Author

Robert B. Parker was the author of more than fifty books. He died in January 2010.

My Review:

A young girl is found dead in film actor Jumbo Nelson's hotel room and Lt. Quirk is convinced that he is being framed for crime.  He asks Spencer to do his detective work and find out what happened and who could be involved.  Rita Fiore is also in for the ride and still flirting with Spencer (which is a treat).

Along the way he meets SixKill better known as Z a Cree Indian bodyguard of Jumbo.  Spencer beats him in a boxing fight and takes him under his wing.  He brings him to his friend Henry who owns a gym who is willing to train boxing to him.  We also learn of Z's earlier years which Parker inserts inbetween his training with Henry and Spencer.

There were cameos by some of Spencer's deadly friends (Tony Marcus and T Bop and Junior, Victor Del Rio, Chollo, Bobby Horse, Lt Samuelson and of course Captain Quirk).  Hawk is still in Eastern Asia.

This book goes out with a big bang and the last book Parker wrote since he died last January.  He is missed!

Phantom Evil (Krewe of Hunters) [Hardcover]

I've finished "Phantom Evil" the 1st book in her new Krewe of Hunter series by Heather Graham.

Product Description

A secret government unit is formed under the oversight of Adam Harrison, famed paranormal investigator. The six members he's gathered know a little of the otherworldly—each has honed a psychic talent of their own.

Jackson Crow, part English, part Cheyenne, heads the group. Haunted by his experience with an ancestral ghost who saved his life as a child, and the recent murders of two previous teammates, Jackson can't tell if Adam's demoted him or given him an extraordinary opportunity. Despite his link to the realm of spirits, he's well aware that the living commit the most heinous crimes, with spiritualist charlatans existing merely to fool and seduce the unwary.

To counterbalance Jackson's careful skepticism, Adam Harrison has paired him with Angela Hawkins, a young woman who learned the painful lesson of loss at an early age. A police officer utilizing her paranormal intuition in Virginia, she already has her hands full. But Adam's call to New Orleans is strong.
The case: In a historic mansion in New Orleans's French Quarter, a senator's wife falls to her death from a balcony. Most think she jumped, distraught over the loss of her young son. Some say she was pushed. And yet others believe she was beckoned by the ghostly spirits that inhabit the house—once the site of a serial killer's grisly work.

Whether supernatural or all too human, crimes of passion, greed and desire will cast the pair into danger of losing their lives…and their immortal souls.

My Review:

Storyline:  The wife of Louisiana State Senator David Holloway, Regina falls from the balcony of their mansion to her death. The New Orleans Police Department investigates and concludes Regina committed suicide as she still grieved the loss of her son Jacob due to a DUI several months ago.

Adam Harrison sends in his special paranormal unit headed by Jackson Crowe and his team consists of five other people, each of which has some sort of experience or knowledge about other-worldly things. Their first job and the place where they all meet each other is in a New Orleans mansion where the senator's wife was found dead on the walkway underneath her balcony. Having suffered a horrendous loss recently, many assume that she has jumped to hear death, but the good Senator swears that she would never have jumped, and asks the special team to come and investigate whether or not ghosts had anything to do with her untimely death.

Jackson and Angela Hawkins a young policewoman from Virginia who has can communicate with the dead  wind up leading a team of younger men and women, all in their 20's. The six of them live together in the mansion in order to investigate and to determine if it really was some sort of ghost that killed the Senator's wife, or if she was killed by someone who was far from the grave.

Characters:  Jackson made a great team leader because he's dedicated, feels responsible for his team-mates, great detective skills, delegates really well and has some interesting talents himself.  Angela made a great right hand women because she's cool and calm in situations, also some great detective skills, can communicate with the dead, level-headed, can take care of herself and nice personality.

Really liked how all the kids as they are called got along really well and figured out the pecking order between them.  They also had no problem with Jackson and Angela leading them and delegating team-work to them, etc.

Romance:  Both Jackson and Angela were attracted to each other from the start and their romance started very slowly and they got to know each other.  Loved how all the kids knew they were sleeping together!

Killer(s):  All of the them had an agenda and motives of why they were killing people, etc.  One of them was really sick and perverted!

Characters:  Vivi has a past. Her traumatic experience in her teen years changed her from a cheerleader/ballet dancer adolescent just coming into the exploration of her sexuality to a pierced tomboy who dressed in baggy clothes doing her best to hide her feminine side.  She's very loyal to her family, determined for the firm to grow and prosper, quite stubborn and a risk taker.

Colt after the death of his fiancee many years ago has left him scarred and determined to ignore any attraction or feelings he may have for Vivi!  His agenda and his motivation for his need for rules and control is spelled out very early in the book that's it's a surprise when he breaks some rules once he partners up with Vivi.  She makes him lose his control and heart!

Romance: Wow the love scenes were very hot from the plane trip to bathroom to the wall, etc.  I literately thought the pages were going to go up in flames!

Killer(s):  Wow were they very cold hearted and would kill anyone that got in their way without blinking an eye or showing any remorse.

My Review:

I highly recommend this book if you like fast paced and non stop action from the first page to the last page.

Storyline:  Zachary Stark is a playboy. He has made his money with his brother and business partner setting up a mega popular online search engine.  He just wants to play and take death defying risks in the name of adventure and seduce willing women. Getting the sexy woman he met in a bar back to her hotel room in the Venezuelan countryside isn't hard. Their night of passion quickly becomes a nightmare when they are kidnapped along with Zak's brother Gideon.

Characters:  Zak is a very sexy hero who feels responsible for his wife's death and fights his intense attraction to Acadia.  He at times was an arrogant jerk to Acadia and didn't think he needed his help.  Boy did she prove him wrong!!

Acadia at the beginning of the book you get the feeling she was a wimp but she was quite resourceful with her vest that had 28 secret pockets and even a tent in her pants legs.

Romance:  The romance between Zak and Acadia is very hot and sizzling!  Though I just didn't like how the hero and heroine thought about sex all the time while the bad guys were after them!

Killer(s):  The killers were truly vile people and they definitely had no remorse on who they killed to get their way

3.5/5
