Something Wicked [Hardcover]

I've finished "Something Wicked" by Lisa Jackson and Nancy Bush.

Product Description

Even the sisters who live here, far from strangers who might recoil at their unnerving psychic abilities, don’t know all the terrors buried within its walls.  YOU FEAR HIM Eight months into a surrogate pregnancy for her sister, Kristina, Detective Savannah Dunbar just wants to wrap up paperwork before taking medical leave. But her department’s investigation into a brutal double homicide has suddenly become much more complex — and personal. And now there are disturbing rumors about the Colony, its matriarch, and a long history of bitter secrets.  BUT YOU CAN NEVER STOP HIM Death has come to Siren Song before. But this time there will be no refuge and no remorse. For everything born in wickedness must die that way — and a killer will not rest until he has claimed them all.

My Review:

In Deception Bay there is a cult with some very deep and dark secrets and a killer is on the loose.

Detective Savannah Dunbar is a surrogate for her sister and brother-in law and is in her last trimester.  She is about to go on maternity leave when people are getting murdered left and right.

I kind of thought it was of weird that she started having an attraction and having sex dreams about her brother-in-law.

It was unbelievable that after giving birth in a car during a blizzard that she is at work the next day in tip top shape.

This series is a little slow moving with interesting story lines and intriguing deep dark secrets the cult wants to keep.

Shadow Woman: A Novel [Hardcover]

I've finished "Shadow Woman" by Linda Howard.

Product Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

From Linda Howard comes a thrilling and sensual new novel of romance, suspense, intrigue and memories that can kill.

SHADOW WOMAN

Lizette Henry wakes up one morning and makes a terrifying discovery: She doesn’t recognize the face she sees in the mirror. She remembers what she looks like, but her reflection is someone else’s. To add to the shock, two years seem to have disappeared from her life. Someone has gone to great and inexplicable lengths to keep those missing years hidden forever. But the past always finds a way to return.

Strange memories soon begin to surface and, along with them, some unusual skills and talents that Lizette hasn’t a clue about acquiring. Sensing that she’s being monitored, Lizette suddenly knows how to search for bugs in her house and tracking devices in her car. What’s more, she can elude surveillance — like a trained agent.

Enter a mysterious and seductive stranger named Xavier, who claims he wants to help — but who triggers disturbing images of an unspeakable crime of which Lizette may or may not be the perpetrator. With memories returning, she suddenly becomes a target of anonymous assassins. On the run with nowhere to hide, Lizette has no choice but to rely on Xavier, a strong and magnetic man she doesn’t trust, with a powerful attraction she cannot resist. As murky waters become clear, Lizette confronts a conspiracy that is treacherous and far-reaching and a truth that, once revealed, may silence her and Xavier once and for all.

My Review:

Linda Howard is one of my favorite authors but I kind of prefer her early romantic suspense books!

This book had more suspense than romance though there is one intertwined within the story of a woman who is trying to figure out who she is and her mystery man.

Lizzy was a great heroine because she can take care of herself without knowing what is going on.  I'm just glad she was a helpless heroine who needed to rely on the hero to save her.

Xavier was an alpha male who wasn't too arrogant and he always had eyes and ears on Lizzy.

Stolen: A Novel of Romantic Suspense [Mass Market Paperback]

I've finished "Stolen" by Shiloh Walker.

Product Description

This thrilling and super sexy novel from bestselling romantic suspense author Shiloh Walker will appeal to fans of Allison Brennan and Linda Howard.

Shay Morgan has stayed hidden for a long time. Living a reclusive life in Earth’s End, Alaska, she’s as far away as she can get from the trauma of her childhood and the man who hurt her long ago. But terror takes over Shay’s life yet again when an unknown stalker steals away the fragile peace she’s built for herself — targeting not only her but the one man who’s ever managed to get past the walls she’s built around herself.

Elliot Winter has lived through being falsely accused before — it ruined his military career. Now it’s happening all over again. And this time, his accuser is a twisted impostor who’s targeting his ex-girlfriend, Shay. Despite a fierce mutual attraction, Shay and Elliot broke up because Shay couldn’t let her guard down, couldn’t let Elliot in. But now they both need to trust each other to confront a psycho who seems to know all their secrets.

About the Author

Shiloh Walker is the bestselling author of If You Hear Her, If You See Her, If You Know Her, Chains, Fragile, and The Missing. She loves reading and writing anything fantasy and nearly every kind of romance. Once upon a time she worked as a nurse, but now she writes full-time and lives with her family in the Midwest.

Language: English
ISBN-10: 0345531906
ISBN-13: 978-0345531902

My Review:

Shay Morgan has painfully distanced herself from her childhood trauma.  She lives in Alaska as a reclusive successful author.  Her website is the only touch with the outside world and she doesn't like being in the spotlight.  She is unwillingly allows anyone to get close to her and is the reason why she and Elliot are no longer a couple.  Someone is impersonating her and spreading lies about Elliot.

Elliot Winter is Shay's ex-boyfriend and is a bookstore owner.  He couldn't believe it when his favorite author Shane Neil came into the store and autographed books, left bookmarks and gave him an ARC of her upcoming book.  When Shay confides in him that she is indeed Shane Neil he doesn't believe her at first but he realizes things aren't adding up and he decides to help her figure out who is pretending to be her.

The mystery suspense was well written and had many twists and turns.  Elliot is a guy you would love to find in real life because he's handsome, smart and takes care of people who he loves, etc.  Lorna is the friend you would love to have in real life because she's caring, supportive and gives great advice.

Nightwatcher [Mass Market Paperback]

I've finished "Nightwatcher" by Wendy Corsi Staub.

From the Back Cover

But on a bright and clear September morning, the familiar landscape around her is savagely altered — and in the midst of widespread chaos and fear, a woman living upstairs from her is found, brutally slaughtered and mutilated.

For Allison for her neighbor, James "Mack" MacKenna, desperately searching for news of his missing wife   for homicide detective Rocky Manzillo, hunting for a monster called "The Nightwatcher" amid the smoking ruins of a devastated city, this tragic day will hold a special horror. Because a different kind of terror has entered their lives and it's coming to claim Allison Taylor as its next victim.

My Review:

Allison Tayler has recently moved to New York and she is enjoying living there.  Then her friend living upstairs from her is brutally murdered and mutilated.

Allison's neighbor James "Mack" MacKenna is frantically looking for news of his missing wife and homicide detective Rocky Manzillo is hunting for a monster dubbed "The NightWatcher" among the devastating 9/11 events.

I hate to admit it took me a few days to finish this book because it didn't really catch my interest.  I did enjoy the storyline and I felt bad for Allison because she's innocent and bad things keep happening to her and around her.  A few characters were shallow and self absorbed that didn't really cared about them but I wouldn't wish what happened to them.

He has a list of possible names and one tantalizing clue: the infant girl had been marked with a tiny tattoo. But when Fletch meets Miranda Lang, he knows she can never be just a name on his list. If she's not his target, he should move on and find the right woman, despite their electrifying attraction. My Review:

Bullet Catcher Adrien Fletcher is on a mission to find a black market adoption baby thirty years ago.  The only clue he has is a tattoo on her butt and the date when she was adopted.  He has a list of women who he has to get up and personal with to actually see the tattoo.  Her birth mother is imprisoned and is dying from cancer and is hoping her bone marrow will save her.

When Adrien first meets anthropologist Miranda Lang at a book speaking event it erupts into chaos with cult like members and he has to help her escape.  He is on the verge of seducing Miranda when he smells blood at her apartment door and they notice a dead bird which means death.  As Adrien digs deeper threats and stolen books indicate something more sinister against the professor.  This complicates his investigation to locate the tattoo as he gets closer, spends more time in her company and starts having feelings for her.

Adrien is charming but quite deceptive and a mercenary while Miranda was smart but fearful.  I really liked how Adrien changed from being deceptive to protective and receptive to Miranda's needs.

This is a very fast paced and deals more with the action suspense mystery than the romance.  You can feel the sexual chemistry between the hero and heroine though it took awhile for them to get to the action and it was hot and steamy.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Iris Johansen is back with the first book in a chilling new Eve Duncan trilogy that asks the question: will Eve survive what lies ahead?

Forensic sculptor Eve Duncan’s mission is to bring closure to the families whose loved ones have vanished. She knows their anguish — her own beloved daughter, Bonnie, was taken from her when Bonnie was just seven years old. It is only recently that this mystery was resolved and Eve could begin her journey to peace. Now, Jim Doane wants the same kind of answers that Eve always longed for. His twenty-five-year old son may or may not be dead and he has only burned skull fragments as possible evidence. But he cannot go to the police for answers without risking his own secrets and dark past, so instead he chooses a bold step to find the truth — a truth that takes Eve down a twisted path of madness and evil and into the darkest heart of her own history. Doane needs Eve Duncan’s skills and he’ll do anything to get them.

Even if it means taking Eve.

The Seance [Mass Market Paperback]

I've finished "The Seance" by Heather Graham.

Product Description

A chill falls over Christina Hardy's housewarming party when talk turns to a recent murder that has all the hallmarks of the so-called "Interstate Killer" murders from fifteen years before. To lighten the mood, the guests drag out an old Ouija board for a little spooky fun and that's when things become truly terrifying.

Summoned by the Ouija board, the restless spirit of Beau Kidd, the lead detective — and chief suspect — on the original case, seeks Christina's help: the latest killing isn't a copycat crime, and he wants his name cleared. Back in the real world, cop-turned-writer Jed Braden is skeptical of Christina's ghostly encounters, but his police sources confirm all the intimate details of the case — her otherworldly source is reliable, and the body count is growing.

The spirits are right. The Interstate Killer is still out there, and Christina's life is hanging in the balance between this world and the next.

My Review:

I hate to admit but this is the first Heather Graham book I couldn't finish!

I really liked the premise of the book (ghost, seance and occult) and the mystery was very interesting but to me the characters weren't very well thought out and I didn't care for them.  The hero and heroine knew each other from childhood but all they did was fight or argue every time they were in the same room as adults.

It was great to see Adam Harrison again though!

Relentless [Mass Market Paperback]

I've finished "Relentless" the 3rd book in her Lodestone series by Cherry Adair.

Product Description

An Ancient Legacy

Lately, the gods are not smiling on Isis Magee. How else can she explain the bizarre events that have led her on a relentless high-stakes chase from Seattle to London to Cairo in search of the elusive tomb of history’s beautiful and enigmatic queen Cleopatra?

A Hidden Treasure

Isis has only two leads: a fragmented trail of clues offered in rare moments of lucidity by her father, a once-respected archaeologist whose last dig ended in disaster, and the unique sixth sense of sexy Lodestone agent Connor Thorne.

The Passion of a Lifetime

Connor also encountered tragedy in the Egyptian desert not long ago, and as Isis pulls him deeper into her mission to restore her father’s reputation, he is secretly plotting a revenge of his own. Propelled across wild, untamed sands by vicious unknown forces, the duo is seduced into a labyrinth of secret chambers. When they fear they can go no further, they surrender to their incendiary desires and discover that the prize each separately seeks may be waiting at the end of the same dangerous road.

About the Author

Cherry Adair has garnered numerous awards for her innovative action-adventure novels, which include Black Magic, her Cutter Cay series and thrilling Edge trilogy, as well as her Lodestone series, which includes Hush and Afterglow. A favorite of reviewers and fans alike, she lives in the Pacific Northwest.

My Review:

Lodestone agent Conner Thorne is on medical leave after a tragedy on his last MI6 mission and his friend Zak Stark hands him a job which he thinks is a waste of time.  His client Isis Magee wants him to help her find the beautiful Cleopatra's tomb.  Her father claimed he found the tomb but is currently in a senior's home with Alzheimer and doesn't remember where.  Connor tells her the can find the tomb if she has some objects he can touch which is his special gift.

He finally agrees to accompany her from London to Cairo where they have to dodge bullets, thugs and death.  As they investigate further they realize events are related to her father's dig.

I loved how the author described the Egyptian people and their culture which makes me wish to visit Egypt even more.

Even though I liked the romance between Connor and Isis (which was very steamy and you can sense the attraction between them) I thought the sex scenes were placed at the weirdest times (dodging bullets and thugs).  Thorne was in a state of arousal throughout the book and I thought it was kind of strange that he thought Isis was sexy when she was dirty and sweaty.

A Broth of Betrayal (A Soup Lover's Mystery) [Mass Market Paperback]

Product Description

Even a town called Snowflake, Vermont, has a summer season. In August, Lucky Jamieson’s By the Spoonful serves chilled soups — celery and green onion, cream of asparagus — and salads. The shop also serves as a gathering place to talk about cold-blooded murder.

A protest to stop the construction of an ugly car wash in the middle of the town’s picturesque Village Green is interrupted by the discovery of a skeleton that may date back to the Revolutionary War. While the remains pose a historical mystery, a present-day murder shakes the town to its core when local auto mechanic Harry Hodges is found dead in his shop.

Straining the patience of Chief of Police Nate Edgerton, Lucky soon finds herself in the soup again when her dear friend Elizabeth, the Mayor of Snowflake, goes missing. No matter how much trouble she has to stir up, Lucky is determined to use her noodle to uncover a killer and recover her friend.
