Arrowed: Resort to Murder IV Recipe

Each book in the Resort to Murder mystery series takes place at a luxury resort. Arrowed takes place in Santa Fe, New Mexico (the 47th state in the union, and Santa Fe is the oldest capitol city in US). I wanted to feature the fabulous food and drink in the story. I highlight the city’s Mexico heritage by featuring a wildly popular drink in Mexico, the Paloma, in the book and included my own take on the grapefruit and tequila drink.

But for this feature I wanted to share my own twist on the Margarita. Santa Fe loves the lime and tequila cocktail so much that they even have a “Margarita Trail” with its own app complete with a map to find the forty-five different variations concocted just for the trail. The app also includes the recipes of the forty-five different Margaritas. Since Margaritas are a big deal in Santa Fe, I am sharing my own Margarita recipe that is easy to make, light and refreshing while easy on the liquor.

The Grand Margarita

Ingredients

1.5 ounces Grand Marnier

1.5 ounces Tequilla (Margaritaville Gold or Reposado)

1 can Frozen Limeade

1 can Beer (Corona or Dos Equis are good)

Lime juice and Tajin for rim

Directions by the glass:

· In a pitcher mix the frozen limeade with two containers of water, set aside. This becomes your mix.

· Use lime juice to wet rim of glass, then dip or roll in Tajin.

· In a margarita glass add 1 shot of Grand Marnier, 1 shot of Tequila, and three shots of limeade mix. Top off the glass with beer and swirl. Garnish with a lime wedge on rim if desired.

It all began when a dying man with an arrow in his chest grabs her ankle.

During a heatwave at a Santa Fe resort, Julienne has the resort owner pressuring her to solve the murder. The victim is a high profile businessman who made enemies rather than friends, leaving Julienne with a roster of suspects. She was supposed to be training the staff and spending quality time with Mason rather than investigating a murder. The heat turns up when an old girlfriend of Mason’s checks in and is determined to get back together.

To die, or not to die? Georgia B and B proprietor Nina Fleet turns amateur thespian to bring the curtain down on a Shakespearean actor's killer.

It's nothing short of inevitable that Cymbeline, GA, hosts an annual Shakespeare festival. But stage-struck Nina Fleet is about to learn that putting on an amateur theatrical production can be murder. Nina's anticipating showbiz glamour and glitz when a community Shakespearean troupe arrives for a two-week stay at her B and B. But the lights dim when she learns the company's director is her nemesis, struggling actor Harry Westcott -- who still claims to be the rightful heir to Nina's elegant Queen Anne home.

Meanwhile, the troupe members are not content to leave the drama upon the stage. Accusations of infidelity and financial malfeasance make a shambles of rehearsals. And then, two days into the troupe's stay, the lead actor is found dead in Nina's formal Shakespeare garden. Natural causes...or murder most foul?

Nina uncovers evidence that something is indeed rotten in the town of Cymbeline. Too bad Harry is the only one who believes that she's not going completely off script. And exposing the truth isn't easy when the remaining troupe members say the show must go on...particularly when all of them seemingly had a motive for wanting their fellow actor to permanently exit stage right. Determined to keep the killer from making a curtain call, Nina and her trusty Australian Shepherd, Matilda, join forces with Harry to sleuth out the murder plot. Will they succeed before someone else shuffles off this mortal coil? Find out in Anna Gerard's delightful second Georgia B&B mystery.

Recipe

From The Great Iowa Caucus Casserole Mystery by Rae Katherine Eighmey

The book is set in the small north Iowa town of Lake Livonian and centers on the community of the Potluck Paradise Café owned by Susan Stewart.

Rice and Cornmeal Waffles

“Special mornings deserve special breakfasts,” that’s a motto at the Potluck Paradise Cafe. The recipe for these sturdy waffles was cooked up during the wheat-saving World War I days. But they’re not just for breakfast. They are equally fine as a base for hot supper dishes, such as creamed chicken.

1 tablespoon vinegar
1 cup milk
1/2 cup cornmeal
1/2 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt, optional
1 cup cooked white or brown rice, cooled
1 tablespoon melted butter
2 large eggs, well beaten

Preheat the waffle iron to medium. Put the vinegar in a glass measuring cup and add milk to make one cup. Stir and let stand for 3 to 5 minutes until the milk sours. In a medium mixing bowl, mix the cornmeal, flour, baking soda, and salt. Stir in the rice. Add the butter, eggs, and soured milk. Stir until well blended and pour batter on waffle iron and cook until golden brown.

Makes 4 to 6 waffle squares depending on the size of your waffle iron.

The Iowa Presidential Caucus is a casserole of finest ingredients — policy ideas, active candidates, determined local politicians dedicated political activists, and hard-working Iowans. Every four years citizens across the state meet to hash out their differences and make a selection. Seldom is one candidate an overwhelming caucus choice. Instead, several winning candidates combine into a single dish of patriotic participation, ready to share with the rest of the nation.

In Lake Livonia, with holiday season fast approaching and the Iowa Presidential Caucus soon to follow, Susan Stewart’s fledgling Potluck Paradise Cafe is humming with the creation of new and delicious dishes to please the appetites of her community.

But then, a mysterious note included in a Christmas card from her friend and mentor, Hazel Romer, who skipped town in the middle of a July night, raises important questions. What was the skeleton in Hazel’s closet that caused her to run away from the town she loved? And why had she left the restaurant to Susan?

When a blizzard traps strangers in town overnight, the stage is set for a series of life-changing events for Susan, her teenaged children, and her friends, as the Presidential Caucus brings Iowa and Lake Livonia into national prominence.

With 30 Family and Potluck Pleasing recipes for main dishes, vegetables and desserts.

Robbie Jordan’s rustic country store is growing in popularity. But when a dead body appears, it turns out that Robbie’s home-style cooking attracts hungry customers — and murder!

While Robbie scrambles through breakfast orders for her expanding clientele at Pans ‘N Pancakes, tempers run as high as the sticky August heat in South Lick, Indiana. Real-estate developer Fiona Closs plans to build a towering luxury resort at one of the most scenic hilltops in Brown County, and not everyone can see the sunny side of the imposing proposition — including Robbie’s furious Aunt Adele, who doesn’t waste a minute concocting protests and road blockades. When tensions boil over and a vocal protester is silenced forever at the resort site, Robbie ditches the griddle to catch the killer. But if slashed tires are any indication, she’ll need to crack this case before her own aunt gets served something deadly next.

Dorothy St. James’s In Cold Chocolate Blog Tour with a Spotlight, Recipe and Giveaway

Bertie’s Cheer-Me-Up Chocolate Chip Pancakes

What’s the secret ingredient? Yogurt and chocolate. When you add it to the batter, it makes a fat, tasty pancake. The chocolate, well, life is simply better with chocolate.

Perfect for a Sunday morning brunch, you’ll be going back for seconds. I love it paired with fruit. But why not try something different? Top with cream cheese and maple syrup. Those two flavors would really play well with the chocolate. And don’t forget to add a little coarse sea salt or Himalayan salt to bring out the dark chocolate’s sweetness.

One of the keys to ending up with a good dish is to start with good ingredients. You won’t enjoy the chocolate flavors if you use an inexpensive (or inferior chocolate.)

Mix together the egg and yogurt.

Combine the wet ingredients with the flour and baking soda.

Add the fair trade dark chocolate. Yum!

It’s a thick mixture. If you think it’s too thick, it can be thinned with a little milk or water. Be careful with the heat level. If the pan is too hot, the chocolate will quickly burn. It’s a delicate balancing act and one I don’t always get right.

In the end, the results are delicious.

Ingredients

6 oz Greek yogurt
1 egg
½ cup flour (gluten free flours will work with this recipe)
½ tsp baking soda
3 oz of fair trade 70% or more dark chocolate, chopped

Combine yogurt and egg in mixing bowl. In a separate bowl, combine flour and baking soda.
Combine yogurt and egg mixture with bowl with flour mixture. Stir in chopped chocolate. Yes, the batter is thick. Heat butter in nonstick pan over medium heat. Spoon batter into pan. Turn when begins to bubble. Cook until golden brown on both sides. Makes 4 large pancakes or 8 small. Serve with maple syrup, butter, and fresh fruit.

Find this recipe and several more in my latest Southern Chocolate Shop Mystery series, In Cold Chocolate. Sea turtles, chocolate turtles, and a murder chill the eccentric residents of Camellia Beach.

In Dorothy St. James’s third delectable Southern Chocolate Shop mystery, a new batch of chocolate and troubles of the heart cause a string of disasters for the Chocolate Box’s new owner, Charity Penn.

The vintage seaside town of Camellia Beach, South Carolina seems like the perfect place for romance with its quiet beach and its decadent chocolate shop that serves the world’s richest dark chocolates. The Chocolate Box’s owner, Charity Penn, falls even further under the island’s moonlit spell as she joins Althea Bays and the rest of the turtle watch team to witness a new generation of baby sea turtles hatch and make their way into the wide ocean.

Before the babies arrive, gunshots ring out in the night. Cassidy Jones, the local Casanova, is found dead in the sand with his lover Jody Dalton — the same woman who has vowed to destroy the Chocolate Box — holding the gun. It’s an obvious crime of passion, or so everyone believes. But when Jody’s young son pleads with Penn to bring his mother back to him, she can’t say no. She dives headfirst into a chocolate swirl of truth and lies, and must pick through an assortment of likely (and sometimes unsavory) suspects before it’s too late for Penn and for those she loves in Dorothy St. James’s third rich installment of the Southern Chocolate Shop mysteries, In Cold Chocolate.

About the Author

Mystery author Dorothy St. James was raised in South Carolina. She makes her home on the outskirts of Charleston, South Carolina with her husband, a neurotic dog, and a fluffy cat. Though writing has always been a passion for her, she pursued an undergraduate degree in Wildlife Biology and a graduate degree in Public Administration and Urban Planning. She put her educational experience to use, having worked in all branches and all levels of government including local, regional, state, and federal. She even spent time during college working for a non-profit environmental watchdog organization.

Switching from government service and community planning to fiction writing wasn’t as big of a change as some might think. Her government work was all about the stories of the people and the places where they live. As an urban planner, Dorothy loved telling the stories of the people she met. And from that, her desire to tell the tales that were so alive in her heart grew until she could not ignore it any longer. In 2001, she took a leap of faith and pursued her dream of writing fiction full-time.

* Dorothy St. James is the alter-ego of award-winning multi-published author, Dorothy McFalls. She enjoys writing in several different genres. Her works have been nominated for many awards including Romantic Times Reviewers’ Choice Award, Reviewers International Organization Award, National Reader’s Choice Award, CataRomance Reviewers’ Choice Award, and The Romance Reviews Today Perfect 10! Award. Reviewers have called her work: “amazing”, “perfect”, “filled with emotion”, and “lined with danger.”
