Sight Unseen Hardcover

I've finished "Sight Unseen" the 2nd book in her Kendra Michael series by Iris Johansen.

She was safe in a world of darkness.

Now danger threatens in the cold light of day…Before the experimental surgery that gave her sight, Kendra Michaels developed her other senses to an amazing capacity. Now she can identify a Nissan by the sound of its engine, a Norelco electric razor by the pattern of stubble it leaves behind, or an obscure colorless fire accelerant by its sweet smell. Law enforcement agencies clamor for her rare powers of perception and observation, too often disrupting the life she has built helping others through music therapy. Because so very often, only Kendra can get the job done.

But in this case, it's Kendra who first realizes that the apparent traffic accident on San Diego's historic Cabrillo Bridge is in fact a murder scene, and she rushes to alert the police before crucial evidence is destroyed. As the body count rises and one murder unveils another, a gruesome pattern emerges. Someone is killing people in ways that mirror Kendra's most notorious cases. She has a fan: someone who admires her work and is twisted enough to show that admiration through murder -- while naming himself after the biggest art forger of the 20th century. He views himself not as a monster but as an artist. And he is not working alone.

In Iris Johansen's Sight Unseen, as the darkness closes in, near enough to touch Kendra and those she loves, Kendra must come face to face with her greatest fears -- and her most ruthless enemy. A man who moves through the shadows, a man she may even know, who hides behind the mask of sanity, sight unseen.

Live to See Tomorrow (Catherine Ling) Hardcover

I've finished "Live to See Tomorrow" the 2nd book in her Catherine Ling series by Iris Johansen.

Catherine Ling is one of the CIA’s most prized operatives. Raised on the unforgiving streets of Hong Kong, she was pulled into the agency at the age of fourteen, already having accumulated more insight and secrets than the most seasoned professionals in her world. If life has taught her anything, it is not to get attached, but there are two exceptions to that rule: her son Luke and her mentor Hu Chang. When Luke was kidnapped at the age of two, it nearly broke her. Now, nine years later, her son has astonishingly been returned to her and Catherine vows never to fail him again. But when her job pulls her away from home, she relies on the brilliant and deadly Hu Chang to safeguard Luke in her absence. Now Erin Sullivan, an American journalist with mysterious ties to Hu Chang, has been kidnapped in Tibet. If Catherine doesn’t agree to spearhead the CIA rescue mission, she knows that Hu Chang himself will go, a possibility she can’t risk. But she will be facing a monster whose crimes stretch back forty years, always eluding the CIA. And the job grows even more complicated when Catherine meets Richard Cameron, a supposed ally who’s clearly not telling all he knows. Their attraction is immediate, but Catherine isn't at all sure that he can be trusted. If she’s going to rescue this journalist with a story worth killing for, she’ll need to keep Cameron very close. From the treacherous landscape of the Himalayas to the twisting back alleys of San Francisco, the clock is ticking for Catherine and those she loves most. At every turn she faces a ruthless enemy who is determined to keep the truth buried, even if it means that none of them live to see tomorrow, in this novel from bestseller Iris Johansen.

Taking Eve: An Eve Duncan Novel [Hardcover]

I've finished "Taking Eve" the 15th book in her Eve Duncan series by Iris Johansen.

Product Description

#1 New York Times bestselling author Iris Johansen is back with the first book in a chilling new Eve Duncan trilogy that asks the question: will Eve survive what lies ahead?

Forensic sculptor Eve Duncan’s mission is to bring closure to the families whose loved ones have vanished. She knows their anguish — her own beloved daughter, Bonnie, was taken from her when Bonnie was just seven years old. It is only recently that this mystery was resolved and Eve could begin her journey to peace. Now, Jim Doane wants the same kind of answers that Eve always longed for. His twenty-five-year old son may or may not be dead and he has only burned skull fragments as possible evidence. But he cannot go to the police for answers without risking his own secrets and dark past, so instead he chooses a bold step to find the truth — a truth that takes Eve down a twisted path of madness and evil and into the darkest heart of her own history. Doane needs Eve Duncan’s skills and he’ll do anything to get them.

Even if it means taking Eve.

My Review:

Detective Joe Quinn has to appear at an important trial so he asks Jane MacGuire Eve's adopted daughter to come stay with her.  As Jane is on her way to visit Eve she gives her a call to let her know that her dog Toby is critically ill.  Jane decides to drop him off at an experimental facility to see if they can figure out what is making Toby ill.  Before she arrives at the facility she finds out the person she thought would be there isn't and she has figure out if she wants to entrust Toby's care to Margaret (a new character that is introduced) a Dog Whisper/Animal Whisper ( a person who can talk and understand how dogs are feeling by communicating with them).  She learns from Toby that he was poisoned by the scruff of his neck by a man who petted him at a Doggie daycare.  As she is waiting for Eve to arrive she is stopped by an sharpshooter and with the help of Caleb she is on a mission to find out who kidnapped Eve and who poisoned Toby.

We learn from Venables who has kidnapped Eve - one Jim Doanes who wants her to reconstruct his son's Kevin's skull.  Kevin was a sadistic child killer who really enjoyed killing little girls with the help of his father who lured them in.  Jim looks like a nice guy but hides a sick personality under his friendly facade.

Jane has her own romantic problems to deal with two men vying for her affections when one of her suitors returns Mark Trevor (one of my favorite characters) to help her find Eve and Caleb the enigmatic and mysterious man who can kill someone by using their blood.

This book was a page turner with non-stop action with a cliff-hanger ending to set up the premise of the next book.  We learn who Eve's father might be or might not be!

I've finished "Sleep No More" the book in her Eve Duncan series by Iris Johansen.

One woman held captive for decades …

Another one freed by the truth …

When her mother, Sandra, asks for help in finding a missing friend named Beth Avery, Eve is sure that she's hiding something. It’s odd that Sandra would get involved at all, and the fact that she adamantly refuses to go to the police for help reinforces Eve’s suspicions that something is very wrong.

Eve learns that Beth has been locked away in a mental hospital for years, which makes it even harder to understand how she could have disappeared. As Sandra reluctantly reveals small pieces of the truth about Beth's identity, Eve is shocked to discover that their lives are strangely entwined, and Beth's disappearance now puts them all in grave danger. Desperate, Eve enlists a secret weapon to pick up Beth's trail: rogue profiler, Kendra Michaels. With an uncanny ability to detect clues and solve puzzles, Kendra begins to uncover the bizarre circumstances of Beth's escape from what should have been the safety of her hospital room. Beth is on the run, and as her mind clears -- detoxing from the drugs that have held her prisoner -- she begins to see the threads of a twisted plot within the powerful Avery family, threatening to destroy Beth and anyone else who might jeopardize the high-stakes game that is already in play.

My Review:

In this book Eve is content and happy now that she has finally discovered the body of her daughter and who killed her.  Then Eve's mother Sandra calls asking Joe for help in locating Beth Avery a patient at a mental institute who has run away.

The book opens with a hired assassin creeping through a mental institute hallway into Beth Avery's room determined to kill her by poison.  He believes he sees a body in the bed but boy was he surprised when she spring at him from behind and got some great jabs at him.  She manages to outmaneuver him and escape the ward with the help of someone from the inside and specifically following his instructions.  The assassin had no idea what he was up against because he was told she was heavily sedated and acted like a zombie.  Now the assassin wants to get revenge on Beth by capturing, torturing and then finally kill her.

Eve finds out that Beth is older half-sister who was born two years before her.  He mom was a wild child in her young teens (14 years old) and was partying hard when she meet Richard Avery who was around 20 years old.  He didn't like using an protection and one day she found herself pregnant with his child.  Her mother went to his family who made both of them sign papers to give custody of the baby to them in exchange for her freedom.  Sandra has always keep an eye on Beth all these years and admits to Eve that she used her as a way to get back at her mom.

As Eve and Joe investigate further they find out that Beth has been in the institute since she was 17 years old  after a skiing accident and someone wants her silenced forever.  They find out that it's Nelda Avery wants her dead and will do anything to make sure that happens.   When Joe enlists the help of Kendra Michaels Bonnie appears to Eve wanting her to connect to Beth by helping Sandra.  Both Eve and Beth start dreaming and participating in each others dreams.

Nelda Avery is viscous, manipulative, devious and smart and her one goal is to make sure her son Rick becomes President and she would do anything to pave the way even resort to murder if need too!

My Review:

CIA operative agent Catherine Ling was abandoned when she was a toddler on the streets of Hong Kong.  She became a master as a commodity trader selling information which allowed her to survive.  She first meets Hu Chang when she saves his life from the drug dealers of the time.  She became his student and learned how to create his potions and understood how deadly they could be.  By 17 she was a deadly assassin and was recruited by Venable from the CIA.  She has become one of their best agents.

Catherine has just returned from a mission in Peru and just wants to see her son Luke.  Luke was kidnapped when he was 2 years old and was forced to learn how to kill.  He was also tortured by his vile, evil and sadistic captor and used to hurt Catherine in a previous book (Chasing the Night).   As a result Luke doesn't interact well with other kids and has grown a hard shell.  He has a private tutor Sam and immerses himself in books and literature to escape.  He is friends with Kelly who Catherine saved (Chasing the Night) and she is very adept with numbers.  He has survival skills and learnt how to use guns and how to use them to kill.  He has taken an interest in Catherine and what she does for the CIA and recently has a fascination with Hu Chang and his medicines.

At the beginning of the book the CIA and Venable have to rescue Hu-Chang from a deadly man.  He was shot but managed to drink one of his own potions to heal.  He sleeps for three days and then is up and about.  He receives a phone call about a package delivered outside but Venable finds a dead agent.  Venable calls in Catherine to clean up the incident and take care of the situation.  She arrives in town and stays at Hu Chang's shop but once again she vows to help her powerful and magnetic friend.

Their target is Nardik who has a history with Hu Chang in the past.  He wants a deadly poison Pandora from Hu Chang and will use Catherine to steal it for him.  In order to control Catherine he threatens her by kidnapping Luke.

She gets help from an unexpected person John Gallo Eve Duncan's former lover and the father of her daughter Bonnie.  Wow was the sexual chemistry between them off the charts.

This was a very exciting and thrilling non stop action with some very evil and sadistic villains.

My Review:

Storyline:   Eve is a forensic sculptor who has dedicated her life to recapturing the face and images of adults and children to help families with closure and to bring their love one back home.  She names each skull and identifies with the unknown person makes her job rewarding.

Eve has been with Detective Joe Quinn for many years and still feels the heartache when Bonnie her seven-year old daughter was kidnapped.  Her body or bones have never been found.

Then Catherine Ling springs a surprise on Eve that John Gallo who she thought was dead killed on a mission is still alive but missing.  It brings up resurfaced old feelings which emerges which causes Joe to be angry and jealous and results are dangerous as all of the players come into focus and the truth about where he has been is revealed.

We learn Eve's mother is a drug-user and always picks the wrong guys to go home with.

The first time John Gallo and Eve's meeting, their relationship and back-story is vividly and clearly told in this novel. John is definitely charismatic, handsome and totally into Eve at first glance. He's her knight in protective armor coming to her rescue when several boys try to attack her.  John is attracted to her gutsy manner for  sticking up for her friend and attempts to seduce Eve to enter a romantic relationship with him.

We also learn about the brutal torture Gallo went through during his captivity by the Koreans after being betrayed by his own country and how it has affected him to this day.  Sometimes he gets really angry spells and you never know what will happen.

As you begin to get more facts she goes after John and finds him and many others that she would rather avoid. Queen seems to have a strong hold on John as does the man they are seeking Paul Black. She finds there is much more as she also reaches out to Montalvo someone else who is also cunning, dangerous and also wants Eve.

When Joe is injured in one of their encounters and returns home Eve starts to work on her latest skull only to be enticed and lured to Milwaukee and into the arms of John Gallo. When Joe reads her note and calls Catherine they immediately go in search of Eve hoping to find her before it's too late. But she will not give up until Bonnie's bones and skull is found and she recreates the face and is finally laid to rest.

When John expresses his true feelings and the reason he set up Eve to come to him she learns more about Paul Black and finds out about his handiwork as he kills someone close to John, seriously injures another and kidnaps a child. Reflecting back to Queen and his relationship with him he recounts to Eve the possible leverage he might have to negotiate with him. That would be an incriminating ledger whose information would link him to some serious allies in Korea.

Why Paul Black is so uncontrollable stems as far back as his childhood when he killed a classmate?

Characters:

Eve is relentless, persistent, vulnerable, hardheaded and definitely unrelenting when it comes to getting what she wants and going after it.

Joe is a former Navy Seal now an Atlanta police detective who never thought he would fall in love with Eve during the investigation of Bonnie's kidnapping.

Paul Black is a psychopathic pedophile killer who is an assassin for the CIA who really enjoys his kills.

Queen is a rogue CIA agent who controls both of them for money!  He even hires other assassins to kill both Paul and John.

Romance:  The romance between John and Eve was very sexy and steamy but not love at first sight.  More like lust a lot of lust!

Killer:  Nate Queen is willing to kill anyone that would interfere with him getting back the Ledger from John or anything to do with money.

Paul Black was really sadistic in his killings and really enjoyed the thrill of it.  He is truly psychotic!

My Review:

Storyline:  Forensic sculptor Eve Duncan stays with her lover FBI Agent Joe Quinn as he struggles to survive stab wounds in the intensive care unit of the hospital following a confrontation with killer Paul Black. As Eve holds Joe's hands she reflects back to when they first met years ago on a child killer case in which her seven years old daughter Bonnie was abducted and assumed dead by everyone except her. Her obsession in bringing Bonnie home dead or alive she risked her life then and has many times since.

Eve's adoptive child Jane flies in from London and Catherine Ling meets her at the Milwaukee Airport where she explains how her search for her son began the events that have Joe in ICU. Black has insisted that Bonnie's biological dad John Gallo has killed her which Gallo never denied as he is unsure though he wants to believe he would not harm his child. Gallo remains free seeking proof in the Bayou that he did not murder Bonnie while Catherine Ling pursues him.

Characters:  Eve was more mature and acted older than her age when she lost Bonnie.  I loved that she has given up hope that she will find Bonnie's remains someday and is willing to risk her life to find out the truth who killed her.

I loved how Joe was very surprised to be attracted to Eve when he first met her and how he wanted to hide and protect her.  He really wanted to find Bonnie to ease her pain and she isn't even his type.

Romance: I really enjoy the romance between Joe and Eve and how their love evolved when they first met to now.

I'm really enjoying the Catherine and John Gallo scenes and their growing attraction to each other.  They make a formable team and a deadly duo to come across.  They are both loners and understand what each are going through.  Their scenes together were really steamy and hot!  Oh I can't wait until they finally admit they need each other.

Killer: We never learn who the killer is but we do find out he is cunning and a deadly adversary.  His kills are very brutal and meant to hurt.
