Excerpt

“Stay close and don’t drag behind.” Seth waved Archer and Jocelyn to the front. “You two after me, Cat, you can be in the middle, and, Tristin, can you and Sydney bring up the end?”

“Works for me.” Tristin circled his arms around Sydney and kissed her neck. “But we might lag behind a little.”

“Perv.” Sydney stepped out of his embrace, but her smile didn’t waver. “Don’t worry about us, we’ll keep up.”

“Great. Then we’re off.” Seth started up the trail, and Cat waited for the first couple to follow.

The first hour went fast with a few stops to take pictures, as well as compare plants with the pictures in the book. By the time they’d reached the first outlook, where Seth was already stopped and waiting for them, Cat’s legs ached. She leaned on a tree and stretched out her calves. “Too many

hours sitting at the desk.”

Jocelyn plopped on the bench that the Forest Service had set up near the lookout. She took out her water bottle and took a long sip before talking. “I haven’t done anything like this since college. I used to be on the cross-country team and ran for miles. I guess I should pick back up that hobby.”

“I can’t believe they have a full setup here.” Archer glanced at the outhouse. “Tell me that’s

functional.”

“The Forest Service maintains this trail year-round because it’s also a cross-country ski trail. For most of the hiking trails the maintenance is shut down November first or at the first snowfall,” Seth explained as Archer made his way to the small building.

“Great.”

Watching the now-trotting Archer, Tristin laughed. “I guess when you got to go . . .”

Sydney slapped his arm. “Don’t be mean. Give Cat your camera and come over here so we can get a picture of us by the overlook.”

Tristin took his camera off from the lanyard that kept it around his neck. “Do you mind? We

have at least one couple picture from every hike we take. And Sydney’s right, this is a perfect spot.”

“Not a problem.” Cat glanced at the expensive camera and pointed to a button. “This one?”

“Yep, just point and shoot. The camera will focus in on our faces so it will set the correct angle and background for you.” He grinned as he made his way to stand by his wife. “It was pricy, but our photo quality for the blog has gone up at least by ten times.”

“He’s always about the picture.” Sydney put an arm around him and a hand on his chest.

Love, Cat thought. It was apparent that these two adventurers loved each other. She took several pictures, then looked at the camera to make sure she got a good photo. Frowning, she looked closer and when Tristin came back for the camera, she shoved it in his hand and rushed over to the overlook.

“What’s wrong. Did the pictures come out bad?”

Tristin stopped and thumbed through the shots.

“These are great.”

When Cat reached the edge of the lookout, she saw what she’d seen through the lens. A man’s leg stuck out from a huckleberry bush across the valley to the closest mountain. Seth joined her.

“What’s going on? What did you see?” He lowered his voice.

All Cat could do was point toward the bush. She knew when he’d seen the same thing when he took a quick intake of air.

“See if you have cell service and call your uncle. I think our hike is over for the day.” Seth turned and looked at the three guests who were gathered around the bench watching them. Archer came out of the outhouse and frowned.

“Are you all waiting for me?”

But when they try to identify some plant and animal life, they find death instead. The body belongs to a man with a gold claim a few miles away. Instead of striking it rich, he’s been struck down.

To his surprise, Seth recognizes the victim from his military days — and up to now believed he’d already died during his last tour of duty. Now Cat has to solve this mystery before the killer takes a hike.”

In Dublin’s fair city, where the girls are so pretty, murder occurs at the feet of sweet Molly Malone.

Ferrying tourists around Dublin for the Leprechaun Limo Service makes quite a change after years in the military. Still, Megan Malone is enjoying her life in Ireland. She likes the scenery, the easy pace, the quirky, quick-witted locals. Everything — except having one of her clients drop dead at the statue of fabled fishmonger, Molly Malone.

Most restaurant critics notch up their share of enemies. Elizabeth Darr, however, was a well-loved international star. She and her husband, Simon, had just had dinner when Elizabeth collapsed, and spoiled seafood is the first suspect. The restaurant’s owner, worried her business is doomed, begs Megan to look into it. Between her irate boss and a handsome Garda who’s both amused and annoyed by her persistence, Megan has her hands full even before she’s cajoled into taking care of two adorable Jack Russell puppies (which she is almost definitely not keeping). But if cockles and mussels aren’t to blame, can Megan find the real culprit before another fishy death occurs?

About Catie Murphy

Catie Murphy, who has written numerous award-winning fantasy and Sci-fi books under the pseudonym C. E. Murphy, began writing around age six, when she submitted three poems to a school publication. The teacher producing the magazine selected (inevitably) the one she thought was by far the worst, but also told her — a six-year-old kid — to keep writing, which she has. She has also held the usual grab-bag of jobs often seen in an authorial biography, including public library volunteer (at ages 9 and 10; it’s clear she was doomed to a career involving books), archival assistant, cannery worker, and web designer. Writing books is better. She was born and raised in Alaska, and now lives with her family in her ancestral homeland of Ireland.

Winifred Page and her corgi, Watson, move to Estes Park to hit the Reset button on life. Fred is about to open her dream bookshop, and the only challenges she anticipates are adjusting to small-town life, tourists, and living close to her loveable mother, Phyllis, and hippy stepfather, Barry.

It’s Christmas in Estes Park, Colorado: cozy fires, twinkling lights, soft snowfall, and… murder.
The winter holidays in charming Estes Park lulls Winifred Page and her corgi, Watson, into thoughts of spiced chai and gingerbread as they settle into their new home. Fred’s dream bookshop is becoming a reality, and with Christmas only days away, her only concerns are spending time with family, enforcing Watson’s diet, and finding the perfect gifts.
The toy store beckons Fred and her friend Katie, who dash in out of the cold, during a shopping spree to discover handmade toys, cuddly stuffed animals… and a dying man on the floor.
When Katie’s desperate attempts to save the man ends in her being taken in for his murder, Fred once again dons her detective hat. She puts aside her Christmas list and—with Watson sniffing around—begins a list of suspects. But as quickly as clues point to one person, new discoveries shift the spotlight to another.
With Katie’s freedom in the balance, Fred has little time to think about gifts or to enjoy the holiday lights and music. A killer is on the loose, one who became violent in a picture-perfect Christmas toy shop, and Fred and Watson can’t begin to predict what might happen next. . .

Fred and Katie are quickly roped into a moonlight snowshoeing hike in hopes of spotting a rare owl. While the endangered bird proves elusive… the murdered man in the snow is hard to miss.
Fred’s growing relationship with Sergeant Wexler hits a snag when he forbids her from donning her sleuth hat yet again. But Fred is a lot like her corgi—she doesn’t like being told what to do, even if it puts an end to a possible romance.

But a chilling afterhours break-in at the charming bookshop leaves Fred and Watson shaken, especially with its connection to a recent poaching incident in the national park. By daybreak, on a cool morning walk through town, Fred discovers the body of one of the poachers…
When Fred’s close friend, park ranger Leo Lopez, asks for her help in proving the innocence of a fellow ranger, Fred and Watson join the investigation. Christmas week sparkles with holiday decorations, sweet potato pie, lively tourists, and murder…

Estes Park is a wonderland of twinkling lights and softly falling snow, and Winifred Page wants nothing more than to snuggle up in the mystery room with Watson at her feet — after all, Katie’s pastries are tempting pieces of heaven, especially beside a warm fire. But Christmas is fast approaching, and Fred is out on a cold morning visiting neighboring stores and planning a celebration at the Cozy Corgi Bookshop and Bakery.

Fred is welcoming the holiday spirit and appreciating the friendships, love, and support she’s found during her first year in her new hometown. But the night’s festivities become a scene for local drama, and by morning a trip to the magic shop to collect a present has Fred and Watson stumbling upon a murder scene. In an unexpected twist, Fred is asked to investigate, but the suspect list keeps growing, and every one of them would give Ebenezer Scrooge a run for his money.

With Fred still coming to grips with a recent betrayal, shifting through all the curmudgeons to crack the case may take more holiday magic than she and Watson possess.

A blizzard is approaching, but the prospect of being snowed in means more time in the lovely mountain retreat — complete with river rock fireplaces, log cabin rooms, and a collection of thousands of keys from around the world.

With the blizzard raging outside the rustic inn, the early arrival of a knitting group adds a touch of drama, but nothing can unravel the cozy party spirit. Even when the power goes out, the merrymaking continues by lantern light. But in the flickering shadows and twisting hallways, relationships transform, secrets are uncovered, and death comes calling.

A weekend of glittering celebration unlocks a storm of change for Fred and Watson…

Summer in Estes Park is filled with tourists, wildlife, pastries, and scandal…

The Chipmunk Chronicles, the local newspaper, has a new gossip column — and gossip is great for the Cozy Corgi Bookshop and Bakery. Though infuriated by the way people are treated by the column’s author, Winifred Page can’t help wondering about the outrageous revelations. Fred’s grumpy corgi, Watson, however, is more concerned with an endless search for treats than the rumors flying around town.

When Gerald Jackson, a less than brilliant local lawyer, is featured in the column, people begin to suspect he’s working the town over in a quest for wealth rather than fighting for justice. As his status sinks, others are pulled under with him — people Fred loves.

For once, Fred and Watson are cajoled into investigation mode not for murder, but to help clear her friends’ names and their tarnished reputations. But while the greed and secret dealings in the dark she uncovers bring more questions than answers, murder finds a way to make an appearance after all…

Halloween creeps in, bringing costumes, carbs, and a corpse or two.

Estes Park is bustling with fall tourists as Winifred and Katie deck out the Cozy Corgi Bookstore and Bakery, while corgi mascot, Watson, helps in his own special way — snacking, napping, and being his adorable grumpy self.

When Fred and Leo’s date at the romantic restaurant, Pasta Thyme, leads to an invitation of a murder scene, instead of ghouls and goblins, Fred is haunted by ghosts from the past. Death might lurk around every corner as Fred investigates motives of infidelity, jealousy, and the dark shadow cast by a crime syndicate.

By the time Halloween night arrives, not everyone will get out alive.

Christmas ushers in snowstorms, fruitcake, and a horde of Santa’s naughty elves.

No place is more perfect for the winter holidays than the charming mountain town of Estes Park. As the Cozy Corgi Bookshop and Bakery glistens with lights and garlands, Winifred Page allows the seasonal merriment to brush away all worry and fear. Watson, her grumpy corgi, is about as far from stressed as possible — after all, with the holiday baking, delectable crumbs are everywhere.

Estes Park’s new Christmas store is chosen to receive exclusive rights to sell a much-coveted collection of tiny elf figurines, but not everyone is thrilled, especially not the owner of the original Christmas shop. Bickering between local merchants is nothing new and doesn’t dampen the Christmas cheer or holiday glee. However, when nightly break-ins begin to occur, Santa himself is caught in the act, Fred and Watson are pulled away from the bookshop to investigate the holiday mayhem.

Unfortunately, while Santa keeps a list of nice and naughty children, he’s allowed his elves to have free rein, and there’s nothing nice about them…

About Mildred Abbot

Reading the Cozy Corgi series is pretty much all you need to know about Mildred. In real life, she’s obsessed with everything she writes about: Corgis, Books, Cozy Mountain Towns, and Baked Goods. She’s not obsessed with murder, however. At least not at her own hands (nor paid for… no contract killing here). But since childhood, starting with Nancy Drew, trying to figure out who-dun-it has played a formative role in her personality. Having Fred and Watson stroll into her mind was a touch of kismet.

Snow Blind blurb

It started out as a simple recon mission – then the worst happened. Recon evolved into an imminent threat and Rapid Response Alliance operatives, Cara Graves and Josh Haskins find themselves with less than 48 hours to circumvent a nuclear disaster. Fighting against the clock and the worst blizzard to hit the Midwest in almost a century, Cara and Josh risk everything – including their feelings for each other – to stop what the terrorists hope will be Armageddon.

EXCERPT

It was just the two of them. That was their reality. All airports were closed. The highways were impassable. No cavalry was riding to their aid.

The weight of the responsibility bore down on Josh like a battleship as he steered the snowmobile down the road.

It wasn't the first time they'd been forced to rely only on each other. On more than one operation, he and Cara had been separated from the rest of the unit and had improvised their way out of a dicey situation. Cara was a seasoned operative, cool and competent and fearless under fire.

And they hadn't come this far to fail.

“Hang on,” he said over his shoulder. “Desperate times and all that.” Then he gunned the machine and they flew down what was now a country road, per the GPS.

Talk about flying blind. The snow. The wind. The speed. The night. It was all working against them.

“Check your wrist screen. We should be close enough to catch their heat signatures soon.” If he didn't hit a ditch or culvert or electrical pole before they got there.

“Already on. How close are we?”

Josh spared a glance at the GPS. “In another half mile, we'll be close enough to run over them.”

He'd no more gotten the words out and the world sank out from beneath them. The snowmobile sailed down a hill nose first, flew in the air for several yards, then plowed through a series of snowdrifts like an ice breaker in the Arctic Sea.

He fought the handle bars to steady the machine. But gravity and velocity and the machine's weight got behind them and sucked them over the snow at warp speed.

They started to fishtail and tip sideways. He backed off the gas, slowing the treads, attempting to regain control.

“Lean!” he yelled as the right skis lifted off the ground.

She gripped him tighter around the waist and leaned hard right with him using their combined weight to counterbalance the heavy machine and keep it from tipping over.

“I'm losing her!” he yelled and backed off further on the gas.

Too far. The machine's treads stopped turning and the only thing propelling them forward then was gravity and velocity. Gravity lost the battle first.

“Tuck and roll!” Josh yelled just before the nose slammed deep into a monster snowbank, jerking them to a stop and hiking the rear of the machine into the air like a diving duck.

Murder hits the stacks when literary agent Allie Cobb investigates a fatality in the local library.

Allie Cobb returns home from a book conference armed with hugs for her cat and her boyfriend, and dreams of a long, hot bath. She’s also getting ready to take the plunge by hiring an intern for her expanding literary agency. But it’s one for the books when Allie finds the town’s librarian — and her longtime role model — seconds away from death on the library floor.

Who would want to poison Vicky Napier — one of Rushing Creek’s most beloved citizens — on the eve of her retirement? But it seems there were toxic people in her life, like the handyman with an obsessive crush, and a wood carver with a hair-trigger temper. The list of suspects includes Allie’s boyfriend, Brent, who’s in the running to take over as town librarian. Avenging her friend’s murder could be a trap as she goes up against a killer determined to write Allie’s epitaph.
