Reece Culver and his friend Haisley Averton travel to Scotland with only one thing on their minds - fishing. After witnessing an automobile accident involving a freelance journalist they quickly realize that something far greater than a crash caused his SUV to sink into the frigid waters of the North Atlantic.

With increasing curiosity, Reece inserts himself into the complicated life of Marie Rhodes who is in the middle of her own crises as she watches her 20-year marriage crumble.

Realizing that they’ll never make it out fishing, Haisley uses his skills in computer forensics to find out who hacked into Karl Rhodes’ office computer at Draecon International and made it appear that he’d remotely accessed the dead journalists laptop. As Haisley combs through logs on the chief of strategy’s computer he stumbles upon an even bigger plot involving a secret drone factory somewhere in the United Kingdom, what looks like funds being embezzled out of Draecon International, and a plot that threatens the national security of the U.K.

Reece spends increasingly greater amounts of time with Marie Rhodes trying to learn what she knows and soon finds that he can’t resist the temptation of falling in love with the woman of his dreams. But as things heat up he questions her true motives.

When Karl Rhodes’ executive secretary is found dead Reece agrees to protect Marie’s soon to be ex-husband Karl. In a tricky game of cat and mouse Reece travels the globe as he tries to keep Marie, her husband, and Karl’s mistress out of harms way, and unknowingly puts himself directly into the crosshairs of a hired assassin.

Saturday June 8, 2013

Julian had been told the target would be traveling south along the coastal road. With a practiced hand he pivoted the stock of the Russian-made sniper rifle on its black steel swivel mount atop the bipod legs and aimed toward the highway below. The SUV would be passing right through his sight there. A chilly breeze blew through the tent, rippling the damp cotton shirt that lay molded to his back. He wasn’t nervous, but he did tend to sweat as the killing hour approached. He regarded the unpleasant sensation as just part of the job. It wasn’t like anyone would ever find out.

Peering through the custom-made rifle scope, he adjusted the magnification between his thumb and index finger, zooming in on the worn white strands of the highway’s center line several hundred yards below. As he rotated the knob back out, he spotted the farthest flag he’d placed in the branches of a nearby tree. The strip of white plastic barely fluttered, telling him the wind was calm.

His square unshaven chin pressed firmly against the cold black stock of the Dragunov SVD, and he pushed upward, seating the steel magazine that housed multiple 7N1 steel-core sniper rounds. With its 151-grain projectile and velocity of 830 meters per second, it was perfect for this type of work.

A rifle was the best — precise, anonymous, and decisive. He ran the shot through his mind one more time. Envision what you want to have happen. He’d read about that in an e-zine, and he adopted it as part of his preparations, even though it was supposed to be part of his ten-year life plan. He didn’t need any plan. In ten years he’d be rich and retired on a private island in the Caribbean.

The tracking device he’d stuck under the rear bumper would tell him when the SUV was near. It would approach on its way south toward the city of Talbert. He’d picked the perfect spot. The narrow Scottish road curved left around a large hill, and the vast expanse of the North Atlantic Ocean spread beyond the guardrail.

Confirm the license plate BV-061-EK, lead the target, and pan upward to the windshield. He’d draw a bead on the man’s head, squeeze the trigger, and watch as the windshield filled with a fine red mist. He’d envisioned the heavy vehicle veering sideways and crashing through the flimsy rusted guardrail before plunging into the depths of the sea. The driver would be dead before he realized how freezing cold that water was.

As the assassin waited patiently enduring the wet chill that reminded him of his home on Bainbridge Island, he monitored the moving red dot on his cell phone. A young woman with a yellow scarf drove past in her blue Volvo sedan. His stomach growled, and he remembered the bacon he’d had at the inn. The slabs were thick and cooked only in patches. Typical British cuisine.

The dot was rapidly approaching, and he shifted his attention to a silver Nissan Pathfinder rapidly making its way up the road. It carried two occupants. Damn it, he thought as a maroon BMW X5 came around the corner. The Pathfinder would pass in front just as the BMW entered his field of fire.

He could feel a drop of sweat rolling down the knobs of his spine. He zeroed in the rifle scope on the BMW windshield. The cross hairs remained steady as the SUV slowed to make the curve. He saw the Pathfinder pass through in a blur. He had a split second of clearance as he squeezed the trigger. The windshield misted red and flashed beyond his line of sight.

Excerpt

Tia heard Timothy for a brief moment, within the wind. “Tia, hold on. This isn’t the end of our story.”

Tia spun around. “Timothy?” No one. She looked back in front of her, heart racing. The silhouette had vanished.

“Hello?”

And then screams, hidden deep within the howls of the island wind, began to speak. Uttering things beyond words. Cursing her. With hatred. Pain. Fear. They mockingly pushed on her spine, her mind, her everything good. Tia felt like a joke, a broken glass. Transparent and shattered. Naked. All of who she wasn’t, consumed all of who she was.

There was no escape in sight, nor a vice on offer but the bitterness of the cold night. No other body to wrap herself around. No other person to hide inside of. She tried to cry more, but all that came out was an exhale. A heavy, tortured breath.

“I’m too tired.” Tia slumped her head down, tears finished, but heart still heavy. She was sitting on her knees in the wet dirt, staring at the rain falling into her hands. “I can’t fix it.”

“There’s nothing music and dance can’t fix, even if only for a time. It takes us out of ourselves you see” said Tia’s Grannie’s voice.

Tia closed her eyes, finding herself in a different memory. She was back in the dance studio where she had taken lessons as a child. The metal seating beneath was cold, and the steam from the hot chocolate in her hands was warm as it rose to her face. Tia looked at the stage in front, where an adult ballerina was stretching against the bar. “But where do we go Grannie?” asked young Tia, looking across at her.

“Wherever we want.” Her Grannie smiled, eyes twinkling. She wrapped her arm around Tia, the bobbles on her multi-coloured knit sweater tickling Tia’s ear. “Look.” She pointed at the dancer who was about to begin. “Watch how everything changes when she starts to move.”

Tia watched as the woman manifested tender beauty and power all at once. Her movement created excitement within Tia’s heart. The way she leapt across the stage with power, and then gently dipped low, had young Tia hooked. She needed to dance.

Tia breathed in, clutching to the joyful memory with the last of her strength. And with that, she opened her eyes, and rose to her feet. Trembling with fear, exhaustion, and hope.

The mixture inside was at war. But she had to hold onto this one good memory. It could be her last. As the rain bucketed down over the island, and the sky moaned in angry anguish, Tia began to dance in the storm. Coyly at first, moving only her arms. Then she ran and leapt through the air, like the woman had done before her. As a maniac, as an artist, as a broken soul, a healer. Woman incarnate. Tia danced as she was. With all that she was and wasn’t, she let her body guide her spirit.

Her limbs ached, her eyes watered, and her mouth leaked sounds of laughter and pain. Every twist she made, a new chapter written. Every dip, a moment gone by, released. This was the final attempt. Tia’s last, desperate counter attack.

Excerpt

Mohammed slowed the van and turned off onto a heavily rutted, muddy road. It had obviously rained up here from what Dara could see. She didn’t know the elevation, but it appeared much higher than the desert floor. There were wheel ruts created by carts drawn by donkeys or horses. The van jolted along at a very slow speed. Dara gripped the arm of the seat, constantly jostled around. There was a copse of trees resembling pines, their green limbs making it look like a gauntlet or corridor that the van would have to crawl through.

Matt sat up, far more alert. What scared Dara was that he had just taken the safety off his M4. Did he see something? What? She craned her neck, trying to see what he saw. Beau removed the safety from his weapon, as well. That sent adrenaline leaking into Dara’s bloodstream.

The van moved sideways as Mohammed fought to keep it on the road. Dara gripped the arm tighter, her gaze moving quickly from one side of the road to the other. Matt and Beau were on full alert, braced, as they continued to scan the enclosed area. Dara could see nothing. This stretch of the road to the village was walled by sixty-foot pine trees and brush that blocked the view.

Her heart started to beat a little harder in her chest.

She saw Matt speak quietly into the mic that lay close to his lips, but she couldn’t hear what he said. Who was he speaking to? Beau also wore an earpiece and mic, too. She was not at all familiar with what Matt did; it alarmed her. There was such a feeling of danger hanging over them it was hard to ignore, but she told herself that it was only her imagination. Seeing the two Delta Force operators put the rifles to their shoulders sent alarm bells ripping through her, and her knuckles whitened around the arm of the seat.

Dara was about to ask what was going on when suddenly, the windshield shattered. The glass exploded inward, like glittering ice shards thrown throughout the van.

“Get down!” Matt roared, aiming his M4 out the shattered window.

Dara lurched for the floor. Callie did, too. The deep-throated firing of the M4s hurt her ears, and Dara felt the van wobble.

Mohammed screamed as the van skidded sideways. A thunk, thunk, thunk of bullets was fired into the careening vehicle.

Dara closed her eyes, biting back a scream. She felt the van suddenly lift off on one side. They were crashing! Oh, God! Clinging to the floor, Callie near her, Dara knew they were all going to die. This was an ambush! She heard Matt’s voice above the roar and heard Beau answer. The sounds were cartwheeling around her and she panicked as the van fell on its side, sliding off the road. It plowed into the tree line and came to a sudden, abrupt halt.

Dara gasped as she was hurled upward and flung across the seat, slamming into the side of the van. She felt pain in her arm as she crumpled into the sliding door. It was now partly open, mud oozing through the crack. The M4s roared, returning fire. There was a chut-chut-chutting of rifles outside of the van, and the sounds converged. Dara’s ears hurt. She couldn’t hear anything. On her hands and knees, she twisted her head, seeing Beau firing slowly and carefully out the shattered rear window. But where was Mohammed? She lifted her head, unable to see him. She saw Matt with the M4 firing, each time slow and accurate.

Then, for a moment, the firing stopped.

“Get out!” Matt ordered. He kicked open the passenger door, leaping out. Beau cursed, trying to open the sliding door, but it was jammed. He grabbed Callie, throwing her forward between the two front seats.

“Exfil!” he yelled, pushing her to the right. Matt was right there, catching her as she was pushed roughly out the passenger-side door. Instantly, he placed himself between her and the wall of the trees, his M4 lifted, ready to fire.

Pretty Girls: A Novel

I've finished "Pretty Girls" by Karin Slaughter.

Product Description

Sisters. Strangers. Survivors.

More than twenty years ago, Claire and Lydia’s teenaged sister Julia vanished without a trace. The two women have not spoken since, and now their lives could not be more different. Claire is the glamorous trophy wife of an Atlanta millionaire. Lydia, a single mother, dates an ex-con and struggles to make ends meet. But neither has recovered from the horror and heartbreak of their shared loss — a devastating wound that's cruelly ripped open when Claire's husband is killed.

The disappearance of a teenage girl and the murder of a middle-aged man, almost a quarter-century apart: what could connect them? Forming a wary truce, the surviving sisters look to the past to find the truth, unearthing the secrets that destroyed their family all those years ago and uncovering the possibility of redemption, and revenge, where they least expect it.

Powerful, poignant, and utterly gripping, packed with indelible characters and unforgettable twists, Pretty Girls is a masterful novel from one of the finest writers working today.
